The Health and Environmental Funders Network (HEFN) seeks a full-time Communications Associate for its Rockville, MD office. The Health and Environmental Funders Network (HEFN) is a network of grantmakers investing to promote healthy people, communities, and environments; its mission is to mobilize philanthropy to advance environmental health and environmental justice solutions.

The Communications Associate will raise the visibility of environmental health and justice philanthropy by developing exciting, educational programming and communications aimed at informing and engaging philanthropy in a broad range of critical issues.


The Associate will manage and execute HEFN's communications and programming work, to include:

Writing and Editing

  • Maintain HEFN's website, including new content development.
  • Maintain HEFN's blog, Giving InSight, including writing posts and managing guest posts.
  • Produce reports and briefing papers for HEFN members.

Manage HEFN's social media presence

  • Develop social media plan.
  • Maintain HEFN social media pages.
  • Seek new opportunities to highlight environmental health and justice philanthropy through placements in other blogs, social media outlets, and publications.

Program Development

  • Design and execute HEFN webinars for grantmakers.
  • Develop workshops and other programming for other philanthropic organizations.

Manage Annual Meeting

  • Oversee meeting logistics in coordination with meeting planner.
  • Recruit and staff planning committee.
  • Oversee agenda development, speaker recruitment, publicity, and attendee outreach.



  • Familiarity with environmental health and environmental justice issues;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and experience writing for the Internet, reports or briefing papers, and other professional writing;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Extensive computer skills (expertise with Microsoft Office, internet research, social media required; experience with Salesforce, design programs, and website content management preferred);
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • A bachelor's degree (master's a plus); and
  • At least three to five years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience with nonprofits or foundations, with collaborative projects, and with event planning would be helpful.
