Water Impacts of Carbon Capture Storage
Join May 7 us for an eye-opening webinar exploring the hidden water costs and environmental risks of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).
As the demand for energy continues to rise, so does the strain on our water resources. This session will uncover how CCS — often promoted as a climate solution — significantly increases water consumption and threatens water quality through CO2 pipeline leaks, acidification and contamination of critical drinking water sources.
Speakers will examine the policy landscape, including how recent legislation and government actions are accelerating CCS projects despite growing concerns.
This webinar will also include information about the country’s first commercial CCS facility, Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM). Last year, two leaks were detected outside of ADM’s containment area near Lake Decatur, which supplies water to residents of Decatur, Illinois, and not far from Central Illinois’ sole drinking water source, the Mahomet Aquifer. These leaks, which occurred seven years from the start of injection, provide insight into the broader implications of rapid deployment of CCS for communities across the country.
Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how CCS impacts both rural and urban water supplies and what can be done to protect these vital resources. This session will equip funders with knowledge about how CCS threatens to undermine their existing efforts to protect water resources and implications for next steps to address the hidden dangers of CCS.
This webinar is presented by TFN’s Urban Water Funders, in partnership with TFN’s GREEN working group, the Health and Environmental Funder Network, and the Funder Collaborative on Oil and Gas.
