The Center for Environmental Health seeks a Managing Director of Programs (MDP), a newly created role based in the organization’s Oakland office, to lead program strategy and enhance the effectiveness of program staff. Reporting to the CEO, the MDP will be a member of CEH’s Leadership Team.

The Center for Environmental Health works at the intersection of public health and the environment, forcing corporate titans to remove toxic chemicals from our consumer products and from our air, food, and water. For the last 20 years, CEH has employed a variety of strategies to change the way companies do business: litigation; public policy; scientific research; community engagement; public education; and the power of the marketplace. A commitment to fairness and social justice underpins CEH’s vision that all people should live, work, learn, and play in healthy environments.

The Managing Director of Programs will lead and manage seasoned program staff to maximize programs’ effectiveness, find synergies between programs, and increase overall capacity - bringing strategy, systems, and a management style that helps individuals succeed and equips teams to achieve more than the sum of their parts. As a leader of leaders, the MDP is a mentor and sounding board to program directors and their teams, holding them accountable while also being accountable to them and invested in their success. The person in this role is responsible for maximizing the skills and expertise of each staff member to meet organizational goals and program priorities.

The incoming MDP will set and meet ambitious goals that eliminate toxic chemicals from food, water, air, and consumer products. With an understanding of the overall environmental health field, the Managing Director of Programs will assess the external landscape to identify needs and opportunities, and will be adept at planning program goals, objectives, and tactics that combine a variety of strategies and harness staff expertise to achieve wins. Along the way, the MDP will ask probing questions that reveal new insights and drive sound decisions, facilitating agreement about priorities among current programs and projects as well as ways to assess new opportunities as they arise.  The MDP will also be a leader who is comfortable making and owning a bold decision in the absence of consensus.

CEH’s vision is that the Managing Director of Programs will be an essential part of taking the organization to the next level. The person in this role will work closely with the Director of Development and the Communications Director to collaborate on cross-functional projects.
