Defending Grantees’ Right to Protest

Protest is a fundamental way of exercising free speech, and an important tactic in building and expressing political power. Now, more than ever, the right to protest is under threat, and philanthropy must mobilize to protect the grantees and partners across the country from these coordinated attacks. Some of them come in the form of SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation) suits. In this webinar, we’ll be zooming in on the Energy Transfer SLAPP against Greenpeace USA, and how corporations use legal tactics to suppress the essential right to protest of the environmental movement, particularly BIPOC frontline activists. We’ll explore what the election results mean for SLAPP suits and right to protest more broadly, and will have plenty of time for Q&A with our speakers and a chance to clarify key roles philanthropy can play in this moment.

Speakers: – Lydia Avila, Greenpeace Board Member / Deputy Director of Grants and Powerbuilding, Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund

– Deepa Padmanabha, Senior Legal Advisor, Greenpeace USA

– Robby Rodriguez, Greenpeace Board Member / Executive Director, Wallace Global Fund
