What is Participatory Grantmaking?
Participatory grantmaking cedes decision making power about funding – including the strategy and criteria behind those decisions – to the very communities that funders aim to serve.”

HEFN’s Participatory Grantmaking Learning Community
HEFN’s Participatory Grantmaking (“PG”) Learning Community was started in late 2019. Its goals are to support current practitioners of PG and to further just and equitable PG in philanthropy. The community hosts calls at least once a month that include deep dives on funds, discussion of key PG themes and tensions, and targeted support for the community’s members.
If you are interested in joining the PG community and joining the listserv to be notified about upcoming calls, please contact HEFN’s Director of Programs, Kalila Booker-Cassano, at kbooker-cassano@hefn.org. You do not need to be a HEFN member to participate, though you do need to be associated with health, environment, or justice-related grantmaking and either actively support PG work or be interested in doing so.
For an introduction to PG, please view this video and slide deck from a Participatory Grantmaking 101 presentation HEFN offered in January, 2022.
