The Barbara and Donald Jonas Family Fund is the founder/main funder of the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence. The mission of the Jonas Center for Nursing Excellence is to improve healthcare through nursing. We make grants that advance scholarship, leadership and innovation, and collaborate on initiatives with other leaders in the nursing field, with a focus on fostering new partnerships across the philanthropic, business, policy and education sectors. The Fund runs the Oakland Strengthening Youth Initiative, which is a comprehensive youth development funding approach that includes the Oakland Youth-Friendly Business Initiative and Awards. The Fund is currently exploring adding the removal of toxic chemicals in children's products as a new program area.

EHEJ Interest:

A board member/program officer is very concerned about toxics as they relate to children's health.

Foundation Strategies:

Deeply researching a social problem (shortage of nurses, lack of work readiness opportunities leading to careers for youth in Oakland, CA, etc.). Building allies across sectors who are concerned with that issue. Funding research, coalition building using a collective impact approach, looking for niche areas to fund.
